Is Native Content Too Difficult to Understand?

After reading many comments from Spanish learners’, a pattern I see is learners putting off watching, listening to, and reading native content in Spanish because they are not ready, it is too hard, and they don’t understand anything.

If you have this perspective (I did a few years ago), the first thing I want you to know is that it is not too hard and that you can still learn Spanish even if you don’t understand. For example, when I couldn’t comprehend what I was reading, I would just focus on the structure of the sentences (word placement) rather than understanding every line I read.

I would get incredibly stressed when I watched a TV show that I didn’t understand. Then, I discovered that listening to these incomprehensible Spanish-speaking actors was exactly what I needed to improve my pronunciation skills, my listening comprehension skills and, later, learn how to develop my Dominican and Mexican accents (I dive into this process in my YouTube videos).

To this day, I listen to incomprehensible native content with a smile on my face because I want to know “how” they are saying Spanish words and phrases. Communication is way more than understanding words and their definitions; it is all about how one expresses them in the pitch of their voice, speaking pace, facial expressions, etc.

If you don’t remember anything from this email, remember this. Even if today is your first day of learning Spanish, I recommend consuming (using) native content. It will help you in an incredible amount of ways. It doesn’t have to be for hours; it can be simply 5 or 10 minutes. Then include native content in your language learning schedule every day.

In my new Spanish Resource Kit, you can find native content to learn Spanish and content created for Spanish learners that I have found and used over the past few years.
